Colostrum for Adults Over 50
Whole, first-milking colostrum with the IGF-1, immunoglobulins, and growth factors used in the older-adult trials below. One 3g scoop a day is the place to start.
Somewhere after 50, a few things start moving in the wrong direction at the same time. Muscle comes off faster than it goes on. IGF-1, the growth signal that tells muscle and tissue to repair, keeps dropping. The immune system gets slower to respond and quicker to inflame, which researchers call immunosenescence and inflammaging. And the gut lining, whose job is to keep bacteria and their byproducts inside the intestine, gets leakier.
Colostrum is not an anti-aging drug. Nothing here will tell you it reverses any of that.
What is true is that the four things colostrum has been studied for most in older adults happen to be those same four things: strength, IGF-1, immune function, and the gut lining. Below is what the trials in people over 50 actually found, including the parts that did not pan out.
What Changes After 50
A quick map of the problem, since it explains why colostrum keeps showing up in aging research.
Muscle and IGF-1
Adults lose roughly 0.8% of muscle mass a year after middle age, and the rate picks up past 60. Serum IGF-1 falls alongside it. The clinical name for the muscle side of this is sarcopenia.
Immune Function
Older immune systems respond more slowly to new threats and sit in a low-grade inflammatory state. Markers like CRP, IL-6, and TNF-alpha tend to creep up with age.
Gut Lining
Intestinal permeability tends to rise in older adults, and a 2024 meta-analysis tied that to higher inflammatory markers. Bacterial fragments leaking through the gut wall are one proposed driver of inflammaging.
Bone
Bone turnover shifts toward breakdown. Markers of bone resorption like NTx rise, and bone mineral density slowly declines.
Strength and Muscle: The Duff Trial
The most direct study on colostrum in older adults is a 2014 randomized trial from the University of Saskatchewan. Forty adults with an average age of 59 did a supervised resistance training program three days a week for eight weeks. Half took 60g of colostrum a day, half took a whey protein blend matched for protein content. Neither group knew which they had.
The colostrum group gained about 24kg on leg press. The whey group gained about 8kg. That difference was statistically significant. The colostrum group also showed a drop in NTx, a marker of bone breakdown, while the whey group's NTx went up. Both groups gained lean tissue and upper-body strength, and there was no difference between them on those measures.
So the honest read is: lean mass was a tie, lower-body strength and the bone marker favored colostrum. Sixty grams a day is a lot more than most people take, and the study was short. But it is a real, controlled trial in exactly the age group this article is about, which is more than most supplements can say.

IGF-1: The 2025 Trial in Adults 55 to 70
IGF-1 is the signal that tells muscle, bone, and connective tissue to build and repair. Levels peak in your twenties and then decline for the rest of your life. Colostrum is the richest natural food source of it, which is the whole reason the growth-factor story exists. We explain the mechanism in our growth factors post, so we will skip straight to the trial here.
In 2025, a team in Thailand ran a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a colostrum-based supplement in 80 adults aged 55 to 70. Serum IGF-1 rose by about 10 ng/mL in the colostrum group compared to placebo. Stool IgG also went up, which the authors read as colostrum antibodies reaching the gut intact. Side effects were mild and cleared on their own.
One caveat worth stating plainly. At least one study in younger, healthy adults found no change in circulating IGF-1 from colostrum. The likely explanation is that colostrum tops up IGF-1 in people whose levels have already fallen, and does little for people whose levels are still normal. That fits the age pattern, but it means you should not expect the same result at 30 that the trial saw at 60.
Immune Function and Inflammaging
Two older-adult studies speak to this, and they measure different things.
Fewer flu episodes
A 2007 Italian study followed healthy adults and adults with high cardiovascular risk through flu season. Some took oral colostrum for two months, some got the flu vaccine, some got both, and some got nothing. Over three months, days with flu symptoms were about three times higher in the groups without colostrum.
A note on how to read that. This was one epidemiologic study, not a large randomized trial, and the authors framed the comparison against vaccination in a way we would not repeat. Colostrum is not a substitute for a flu shot. What the study does suggest is that colostrum's immunoglobulins may add some protection on top of whatever else you are doing.
Lower inflammatory markers
The second study is more recent and more careful. In 2023, researchers in Malaysia gave adults aged 50 to 69 either colostrum-enriched milk or regular milk twice a day for 12 weeks, double-blind. The colostrum group finished with lower expression of CRP, IL-6, and TNF-alpha, the three markers that usually get used to define inflammaging.

The Gut Lining
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Ageing Research Reviews pooled ten studies of stool markers in older adults and found higher levels of both permeability markers (zonulin, alpha-1-antitrypsin) and intestinal inflammation markers (calprotectin, lactoferrin) in older adults with age-related conditions. In plain terms, the gut wall gets leakier and more inflamed with age, and that leak feeds the systemic inflammation described above.
Colostrum's gut-lining evidence is older and better established than its aging evidence. The 1999 study in Gut showed colostrum protected the intestinal lining from NSAID damage in humans, and the 2014 systematic review in Nutrition Reviews collected the clinical trials on colostrum and gut barrier function up to that point. None of those trials were in older adults specifically, so the link to aging is inferred, not proven. We go deeper in the gut-immune connection and colostrum for IBS and leaky gut.
Bone
The only direct bone data in older adults comes from the Duff trial above: the colostrum group had a drop in NTx, a marker of bone resorption, while the whey group did not. That is one marker in one eight-week study. It is encouraging, and it lines up with what IGF-1 is known to do for bone, but nobody has measured bone density after long-term colostrum use in this age group. We would not buy colostrum for your bones on the current evidence.
What Colostrum Will Not Do
✓ Supported by trials in older adults
- Strength gains during resistance training, at least in the legs, beyond what protein alone produced
- Raising IGF-1 in adults whose levels have already declined
- Lower inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-alpha) over 12 weeks
- Passive immune support through immunoglobulins that reach the gut
✗ Not supported
- Reversing aging or extending lifespan. No human study has looked at this, and none is likely to
- Replacing resistance training or protein. Every positive muscle result came from people who were lifting
- Replacing vaccines or medical care. The flu study is not that kind of evidence
- Working without consistency. The trials ran 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. A scoop now and then will not reproduce them
How Adults Over 50 Typically Use It
The trials used a wide range: 60g a day in the Duff study, 20g in the Antonio body composition study, and smaller amounts in the 2025 and 2023 trials. TBR Labs' standard serving is 3g, which is a maintenance dose, not a research dose. Most people over 50 do fine starting there and staying there. Anyone chasing the strength or gut results may want to work up toward 10g a day over a few weeks.
- Start with one 3g serving in the morning for two weeks to check tolerance
- Take it every day. Consistency mattered more than timing in every study above
- Pair it with resistance training if you can. That is the condition under which the muscle results happened
- Talk to your doctor first if you are on medication, have a dairy allergy, or have a condition that affects the immune system

The Bottom Line
If you are over 50 and looking at colostrum, the evidence is better than it is for most supplements aimed at this age group, and still thin. Two controlled trials in older adults found meaningful results: more leg strength and less bone breakdown during training, and higher IGF-1 with lower inflammatory markers over 12 weeks. A third, weaker study found fewer flu days.
None of that adds up to an anti-aging treatment. What it adds up to is a food-based supplement that supports four systems that tend to weaken after 50, with the most reliable results in people who are also lifting weights and taking it daily. That is a reasonable reason to try it. It is not a reason to skip the gym.
